For Elissa Slingsby, visiting Ethiopia was not something she had ever imagined doing. But after years of supporting Catherine Hamlin Fistula Foundation, she decided it was time to see Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia’s work firsthand.
“It was well outside my comfort zone, but managing a health recruitment agency means the work of midwives is very close to my heart.
“I never thought I’d do something like this, but it has been amazing and so rewarding.”
During her time in Ethiopia, Elissa saw firsthand the breadth of Hamlin’s work — from the specialist treatment provided at Hamlin’s six fistula hospitals, to the rehabilitation and reintegration support offered at Desta Mender, and the training of midwives, through the Hamlin College of Midwives, helping to prevent obstetric fistula in rural communities.
She also experienced many moments of personal connection, joy and inspiration along the way. Here, Elissa shares some of the special moments.
What would Elissa say to someone thinking of planning their own Ethiopian Adventure? “Absolutely do it. Don’t even think about it.”
